Weebly to WordPress

WordPress hosting for sites moving off Weebly.

Weebly gives you an archive of HTML, not a site you can import. The pages come across as content; the design and the store are rebuilt rather than moved.

An export that is not a site

What Weebly actually hands you.

The archive it produces is a folder of rendered pages. Useful as a source of text and images, useless as something to import.

Rendered HTML, not structured content

The export is what the browser saw, not the content behind it. Posts, pages and their metadata are pulled out of that rather than imported from it.

ExtractedNot a WXR file

Drag-and-drop layouts with no counterpart

Weebly's layouts exist only inside its editor. The design is rebuilt in a WordPress theme rather than translated, because there is nothing to translate it from.

A store that belongs to Square

Weebly commerce is tied to Square for payments and inventory. Products, orders and the payment relationship are each a separate decision, not one import.

Payments planned first

URLs that will not match

Weebly's page addresses follow its own conventions, so the new structure is chosen and every old address redirected rather than reproduced.

Forms and members rebuilt

Form submissions and any member area live inside Weebly with no export path, so both are recreated and the existing data exported separately if it matters.

Migration

Treat it as a rebuild with the content carried over.

Calling this a migration sets the wrong expectation. The writing and the images move; everything that made it look and behave the way it did is built again.

  • Content extracted from the HTML export
  • Theme rebuilt rather than translated
  • Store and payment approach agreed first
  • Redirects mapped for every old URL

Performance

A site that is yours to tune.

Weebly performance is whatever Weebly decides. Once the content is in WordPress, caching, images and the database are all things you can act on.

Configuration

What this move needs that a host migration does not

Weebly is a closed builder, so almost everything here is a decision rather than a transfer.

SettingWhat we doWhy
Content extractionPages and posts pulled out of the rendered HTML archiveWeebly's export is what the browser was served rather than structured content, so there is no importer that will take it and the text has to be recovered from markup.
DesignRebuilt as a WordPress theme rather than convertedIts drag-and-drop layouts exist only inside its own editor, so there is no portable representation of the design to convert from.
Store and paymentsProducts migrated and the Square relationship decided before launchWeebly commerce is bound to Square for payments and inventory, so the store is not one import but a product move plus a separate decision about who takes the money.
URL structureNew permalinks chosen and every old address redirectedWeebly generates addresses in its own convention that WordPress will not reproduce, so ranking pages need explicit redirects rather than a matching structure.
Forms and membersRecreated, with existing submissions exported separately if they matterBoth live inside Weebly with no export path of their own, so anything already collected is lost unless it is pulled out before the account closes.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Can WordPress import my Weebly export?
No. What Weebly gives you is an archive of rendered HTML — the pages as a browser received them — rather than structured content, so no importer takes it and the text and images are extracted instead.
Will my site look the same afterwards?
It is rebuilt to match rather than transferred. Weebly's layouts only exist inside its editor, so there is no design file to convert — the look is recreated in a WordPress theme.
I sell through Weebly. What happens to my store?
Products come across, and the payment side is decided before launch. Weebly commerce is tied to Square, so who processes payments afterwards is a real choice rather than a setting that carries over.
Can I keep my page addresses?
Not exactly, so they are redirected. Weebly builds URLs in its own convention that WordPress will not reproduce, and every address that ranks gets an explicit redirect to its new home.
What about my form submissions?
Export them before the account closes. Forms are rebuilt here, but the data already collected lives inside Weebly with no export path once the subscription ends.
